Body Shape Calculator

Most body shape calculators are built by generic calculator sites that take three numbers, return a fruit, and leave you there. This one takes four, because the fourth one matters: shoulder width is what separates an inverted triangle from an hourglass, and almost every calculator uses your bust as a stand-in for it. If you have narrow shoulders and a full bust, or broad shoulders and a small one, that substitution gives you the wrong answer. We also publish the thresholds we use, so you can see exactly why your result came out the way it did rather than taking a word on trust.

Short answer: Your body shape is the relationship between your shoulders, bust, waist and hips — not any one measurement. If your bust and hips are within about five per cent of each other and your waist is at least a quarter smaller, that is an hourglass. If your hips are clearly the widest, that is a pear.

THE FIVE SHAPES

What Is My Body Shape? The Five Categories Explained

Ask what is my body shape and you will get five answers from five sites, partly because the systems use different names for the same thing and partly because the boundaries genuinely overlap. The five below are the standard set used across the fashion industry, given with both their common names and their geometric ones. Read the measurements first and the name second — the categories exist to describe a proportion, and the proportion is the useful part.

  • Hourglass

    · Also called: Figure eight
Bust and hips within about five per cent of each other, with a waist at least a quarter smaller than both.

The shoulders and hips sit in line with one another and the waist is clearly defined. This is the proportion most standard sizing is drafted around, which is why hourglass shapes often find that garments fit without alteration more frequently than other shapes do — and also why the category is talked about far more than its actual frequency warrants.

  • Pear

    · Also called: Triangle, spoon
Hips measure around five per cent or more greater than the bust, with a defined waist.

The widest measurement is at the hip and the narrowest at the waist, with shoulders narrower than hips. This is one of the most common proportions and the one most likely to need two different sizes at once — buying for the hip and taking the waistband in is routine, and is the single most common alteration any tailor performs.

  • Apple

    · Also called: Round, oval
Waist measures close to or greater than the bust and hips, with weight carried through the midsection.

The waist is the least defined of the four measurements and the bust is often full. Apple shapes tend to have slimmer legs relative to the torso, which is why trousers and skirts frequently fit when tops do not. Sizing is usually decided by the bust or waist rather than the hip.

  • Rectangle

    · Also called: Straight, banana, ruler
Bust, waist and hips within about five per cent of one another, with a waist less than a quarter smaller than the bust.

The measurements run close to parallel, with little difference between the widest and narrowest points. Rectangles usually find that garments sit without pulling anywhere, and that belts, tucks and structured waistbands change the line of an outfit more than they do on other shapes.

  • Inverted triangle

    · Also called: Athletic, V shape
Shoulders or bust measure around five per cent or more greater than the hips.

The upper body is the widest point. This is the shape most often mis-identified, because calculators that skip the shoulder measurement read a full bust as an inverted triangle and broad shoulders with a small bust as a rectangle. If your shoulder measurement is the largest of your four, this is your shape regardless of what your bust does.

Most people are not a clean example of one shape. Sitting between two is the normal outcome, not a failure of the measurement — read both descriptions and use whichever matches what you see in a mirror.

THE PART NOBODY PUBLISHES

The Actual Thresholds This Calculator Uses

Short answer: Shape categories are decided by ratios, not by absolute measurements. We use a five per cent difference between the widest points and a twenty-five per cent waist reduction as the boundaries. Different sources use slightly different cut-offs, which is why two calculators can disagree about the same body.

Put your measurements into three different body shape calculators and there is a reasonable chance you will get two different answers. That is not because one of them is broken. It is because the boundaries between shapes are conventions rather than facts, and every site picks its own without telling you what they are. A body shape by measurements result means very little if you cannot see the rule that produced it, so here is ours in full.

Everything is a ratio. Absolute measurements do not determine shape at all — a 32 inch bust and a 42 inch bust can both be hourglass, because what matters is how the four measurements relate to one another. We compare the largest of shoulders and bust against the hip measurement, and the waist against whichever of those is larger. A difference under five per cent counts as balanced; five per cent or more counts as clearly wider. The waist is described as defined when it is at least twenty-five per cent smaller than the larger of the upper and lower measurements.

Where your figures land within a couple of percentage points of a boundary, we say so rather than picking one and sounding certain. Around a third of people fall into that band, and telling them they are definitively one thing would be worse than useless. The calculator reports the primary result, names the neighbouring shape, and lets you decide which description fits what you actually see.

Body Shape Calculator Threshold Rules
SHAPE THE RULE
Hourglass Bust and hips within 5%, waist at least 25% smaller
Pear Hips exceed bust by 5% or more
Inverted triangle Shoulders or bust exceed hips by 5% or more
Rectangle All three within 5%, waist less than 25% smaller
Apple Waist equal to or greater than bust and hips

A worked example

Shoulders 38, bust 35, waist 27, hips 36. Bust and hips differ by one inch, which is under three per cent, so the upper and lower body are balanced. The waist is nine inches smaller than the hips, which is twenty-five per cent, so the waist is defined. Result: hourglass. Note that the shoulders are the largest single number and it makes no difference — shoulder width only decides the shape when it exceeds the hips by five per cent or more, and here it does not.

BEFORE YOU CALCULATE

How to Determine Body Shape: Taking the Four Measurements

Short answer: Measure your shoulders around the widest point at the top of the arms, your bust at the fullest part, your waist at the narrowest, and your hips at the fullest. Keep the tape level, stand relaxed, and measure over close-fitting underwear rather than clothing.

Figure outline seen from the front with four marked measurement lines: 01 Shoulders at widest point across arms, 02 Bust at fullest part, 03 Waist at narrowest point, and 04 Hips at widest point. 01 02 03 04
Four measurement bands: Shoulders, Bust, Waist, Hips
01

01 Shoulders

Run the tape around your body at the widest point across the top of the arms, just below the shoulder joints and above the bust. This is the measurement most calculators skip, and it is the one that identifies an inverted triangle. If you cannot reach comfortably, have someone else take it, or measure straight across the back from shoulder point to shoulder point and double it.

02

02 Bust

Measure around the fullest part of the bust, under the arms and level across the back. Wear the bra you usually wear, since a different bra changes this figure by an inch or more. Stand relaxed and do not pull the tape tight.

03

03 Waist

Find the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the navel and below the ribs. Bending to one side reveals the natural crease if you are unsure. Keep a finger's width under the tape rather than measuring flush, and breathe normally.

04

04 Hips

Measure the fullest point, usually seven to nine inches below the waist, with your feet together. Check in a mirror that the tape is level behind you, which is where it most often slips.

Write all four down. The dress size calculator, the jeans size converter and the clothing size converter on this site all run from the same numbers.

If you have no tape measure

A length of ribbon or a phone charging cable works: wrap it, mark the overlap with your thumb, then lay it flat against a ruler. String is the one thing to avoid, since it stretches and will give you figures that are too small — and because shape is a ratio, a consistent error across all four measurements matters less here than it would for sizing.

A DIFFERENT SYSTEM

Why There Is No Such Thing as a Kibbe Body Type Calculator

Short answer: The Kibbe system is not based on measurements, so it cannot be calculated from them. It assesses bone structure, vertical line and facial features by eye. Any Kibbe calculator asking for your bust, waist and hips is applying the wrong method to the wrong system.

Search for a kibbe body type calculator and you will find a dozen of them, most asking for the same three measurements as any other shape tool. They should not exist. David Kibbe's system sorts people into thirteen image types based on bone structure, the vertical line of the body, the degree of flesh, and facial features — none of which a tape measure can capture. A tall, sharply angular frame and a short, softly curved one can produce identical bust, waist and hip figures and sit at opposite ends of the Kibbe spectrum.

The two systems are also asking different questions. The five shapes on this page describe where your width sits, which is a question about garment fit: which measurement decides your size, where a seam will pull, whether you need two sizes at once. Kibbe describes overall visual line, which is a question about aesthetic: whether sharp or soft detailing suits you, whether long uninterrupted lines work better than broken ones. Knowing your shape will not tell you your Kibbe type, and knowing your Kibbe type will not tell you your dress size.

We have not built a Kibbe calculator and we are not planning to, because building one would mean pretending a measurement can answer a question it cannot. If the system interests you — and it is genuinely useful once you get past the calculators — The Concept Wardrobe maintains the most thorough free guide and test available, and it works the way the system is meant to work, by looking rather than measuring.

NO TAPE MEASURE?

Body Shape Quiz: Finding Your Shape Without Measuring

Short answer: Stand in front of a mirror in close-fitting clothes and answer four questions about where your body is widest and how defined your waist is. It is less precise than measuring but lands most people in the right category.

A body shape quiz will never be as accurate as four measurements, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. What it can do is get you close enough to be useful when you have no tape to hand, and it is frequently how people discover that the shape they assumed they were is not the shape they actually are. Answer honestly about what you see rather than what you expect, stand relaxed rather than held in, and take it in a mirror rather than from memory.

01 Standing straight, which part of your body is widest?

Shoulders · Bust · Waist · Hips · They look about the same

02 How defined is your waist?

Clearly narrower than bust and hips · Slightly narrower · About the same · The widest point

03 Compare your shoulders to your hips in the mirror.

Shoulders wider · Hips wider · About the same

04 Where do you tend to need a larger size?

Tops · Bottoms · Both equally · Neither, but the waist gapes

METHODOLOGY

How This Calculator Works

Body shape is the one measurement system on this site with no standards body behind it at all. Every site sets its own boundaries, and most do not say what they are. Here are ours, and their limits.

What this body shape calculator is built on

The five-shape system is the standard fashion classification, and the ratios we use to draw the boundaries are set out in full in the thresholds section above — a five per cent difference between the widest upper and lower measurements, and a twenty-five per cent reduction for a defined waist. Those figures sit within the range used across published sizing and styling literature, but they are conventions rather than standards, and a site using a seven per cent boundary is not wrong. We publish ours so you can see the working and compare.

Why we ask for shoulders as well

Because the inverted triangle is defined by shoulder width and almost every calculator substitutes the bust for it. That substitution works for people whose shoulders and bust are proportional and fails everyone else: narrow shoulders with a full bust read as inverted triangle when they are not, and broad shoulders with a small bust read as rectangle when they are not. Four measurements take one minute longer and remove the most common misclassification in the category.

Why we do not offer a photo upload

Several tools now offer to identify your shape from a photograph. We have chosen not to. A body photograph is considerably more sensitive than the measurements that produce the same answer, an automated reading of one is less accurate than a tape measure, and a wrong result delivered from an image feels more personal than a wrong result from arithmetic. If you would rather not measure, the quiz above reaches a similar answer with nothing uploaded anywhere.

Where this calculator is least reliable

Three situations. Measurements sitting within a couple of points of a boundary, which applies to roughly a third of people and is why we name the neighbouring shape rather than pick one. Bodies where the measurement points are hard to locate consistently, since the waist in particular can move an inch depending on where you read it. And any use of the result beyond garment fit — shape categories describe proportions and nothing else, and they carry no information about health, fitness or anything other than how clothes are likely to sit.

For a neutral overview of how female body shape has been classified and how those classifications have shifted over time, Wikipedia's entry on female body shape is the clearest source with no commercial interest attached. For the Kibbe system discussed above, The Concept Wardrobe maintains the most thorough free guide and test online.

QUESTIONS

Body Shape Calculator FAQ

What is my body shape?
Your body shape is the relationship between your shoulders, bust, waist and hips. If your bust and hips are within about five per cent of each other and your waist is at least a quarter smaller, that is an hourglass. If your hips are clearly widest, that is a pear. If your shoulders are, that is an inverted triangle.
Can I find my body shape from my height and weight?
No. Shape is the relationship between four circumference measurements, and two people of identical height and weight can be completely different shapes. Height and weight carry no information about where your width sits.
Why do two calculators give me different body shapes?
Because there is no standards body for body shape, and every site sets its own boundaries. One may treat a five per cent difference as significant where another uses seven. Our thresholds are published in full above so you can see exactly which rule produced your result.
What if I am between two body shapes?
That is the normal outcome, not a problem with your measurements u2014 around a third of people sit near a boundary. Read both descriptions and use whichever matches what you see. In practice the styling advice for neighbouring shapes overlaps considerably.
Do I need to measure my shoulders?
For an accurate result, yes. Shoulder width is what distinguishes an inverted triangle, and calculators that substitute the bust for it misclassify anyone whose shoulders and bust are not proportional. It is the most common source of a wrong answer in this category.
If I have hip dips, what is my body shape?
Hip dips are a normal feature of pelvic structure, present in a large share of people, and they do not affect your shape category. Shape is determined by circumference at the fullest point of the hip, which hip dips do not change.
Is there a Kibbe body type calculator?
No, and any tool claiming to be one is applying measurements to a system that does not use them. Kibbe types are assessed visually from bone structure, vertical line and facial features. The section above explains the difference between the two systems.
Does my body shape change?
It can. Shape is a proportion, and proportions shift with weight change, pregnancy, hormonal changes and age u2014 though many people find their relative proportions stay fairly stable while their measurements change. Re-measure if your clothes have started fitting differently.
